Issue No.041
TL;DR // This edition is all about incentives for recycling, decentralized photo-sharing, carbon casting, visionary rail network for Europe and recycling plastics into valuable fuels.
Hej, this is Sustainovation Tidbits.
As people remember from my previous newsletter Timo's Trend Thursday, this format is known for sharing bite-sized trend insights that pack a punch without going into epic detail. With over 950 trends and innovations featured across 190 episodes of Timo's Trend Thursday it’s time to kick off something new. But somehow similar.
For those who are passionate about the convergence of design, tech, innovation and sustainability, Sustainovation Tidbits is your go-to destination for a weekly dose of inspiration and insight.
01. Trashie
Trashie.io is a platform that incentivizes individuals to recycle clothing and electronic waste by offering rewards, termed "TrashieCash," which can be redeemed for exclusive products or services.
What’s differentiating?
Approximately 85% of textiles end up in landfills, equating to about 21 billion pounds annually in the U.S. alone. In 2019, a record 53.6 million metric tonnes of electronic waste was generated globally, with only 17.4% being collected and recycled, leading to significant environmental and health risks. The platform provides users with "Take Back Bags" and "Tech Take Back Boxes" to facilitate the collection and recycling of unwanted clothing and electronic devices. Participants earn TrashieCash rewards for their recycling efforts, which can be redeemed for various products or services, thus encouraging continuous engagement in sustainable practices.

02. Pixelfed
Pixelfed is a free, open-source, decentralized photo-sharing platform that offers functionalities similar to Instagram, allowing users to share images and interact socially without centralized data storage. It's the Instagram of the Fediverse.
What’s differentiating?
Pixelfed addresses concerns related to data privacy, centralized control of social media platforms, and the environmental impact of large-scale data centers. Traditional social media platforms often collect extensive user data for targeted advertising, raising privacy concerns. Pixelfed's decentralized architecture ensures that user data is not stored on a single central server, granting individuals greater control over their information. The platform provides users with a photo-sharing experience free from advertisements and intrusive tracking, focusing on privacy and community engagement. Users can join or create independent servers (instances), fostering diverse communities with localized moderation and policies.
03. Graphyte
Graphyte is a carbon removal company that utilizes its proprietary "Carbon Casting" technology to sequester carbon dioxide by converting biomass waste into stable carbon blocks, which are then stored underground for over 1,000 years.
What’s differentiating?
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that 5 to 10 billion tons of CO₂ need to be removed from the atmosphere annually by 2050 to meet climate goals. Currently, less than 0.001% of that amount is being removed. Graphyte's method involves drying biomass to eliminate microbes and prevent decomposition, compressing it into dense carbon blocks, and encasing these blocks in impermeable barriers. These are then stored in monitored underground sites, ensuring CO₂ remains sequestered for over a millennium. The company's approach achieves carbon removal at costs below $100 per ton, making it a financially viable option for large-scale implementation. Graphyte's technology is designed for immediate scalability, with the potential to remove billions of tons of CO₂, addressing the urgent need for effective carbon sequestration solutions.
04. 21st Europe Starline
Starline is a visionary blueprint by the Think Tank 21st Europe for a unified high-speed rail network designed to connect European countries seamlessly, akin to a metro system, enhancing cross-border mobility and fostering continental cohesion.
What’s differentiating?
Starline addresses the fragmentation of Europe's current rail infrastructure, which hampers efficient cross-border travel and contributes to environmental challenges due to reliance on less sustainable transportation modes. High-speed rail travel emits approximately 90% less CO₂ per journey compared to air travel. In 2023, 8 billion passengers traveled by high-speed rail globally, yet fewer than 9% of these journeys were cross-border, highlighting the need for a more integrated European network. Starline proposes a high-speed rail system operating at speeds of 300–400 km/h, connecting 39 stations across Europe, including cities like Helsinki, Berlin, Milan, and Munich. This integration aims to make cross-border travel as seamless as intra-city metro journeys. The network is planned to be powered by renewable energy sources, incorporating solar, wind, and battery storage across its stations and tracks, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of European transportation.
05. Resynergi
Resynergi is an advanced recycling technology company that utilizes its proprietary Continuous Microwave Assisted Pyrolysis (CMAP) system to convert traditionally non-recyclable plastics into valuable fuels and chemical products.
What’s differentiating?
Plastic waste is projected to increase by 70% by 2050, exacerbating environmental pollution and resource depletion. Currently, only about 6% of plastic is recycled in the United States, highlighting the inefficiency of existing recycling systems. Resynergi's patented CMAP system employs microwave energy to rapidly break down plastic molecules, converting them into valuable feedstocks for new plastic products. This process is significantly faster than traditional pyrolysis methods, enhancing efficiency and scalability. The CMAP process generates clean products with an average 68% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional polymer production methods, contributing to climate change mitigation efforts.
